The Language of Jeans

Jeans are as American as apple pie, baseball and the Fourth of July.  We all have them.  We all love them.  And from time to time we are all baffled when it comes to the terminology of jeans.  Jeans have their own language.  So until Babelfish.com recognizes it as a language, here is a basic language guide.

Words describing the denim fabric

  • Acid wash – the denim fabric will have vivid white portions. This is accomplished in the manufacturing process by scrubbing the denim with chlorine soaked pumice stones.
  • Creased – once meant that someone ironed the jeans.  Now it means that a tiny white stripe down the front of each leg has been added in the manufacturing process to give the illusion that the jeans have been ironed.
  • Dirty wash – are jeans that are manufactured to look dirty.
  • Stone wash –similar to its acid wash cousin, stone wash fades the jeans more evenly.  This manufacturer uses pumice stones, sand and enzymes to achieve the look.

Words describing the style of jeans

  • Boyfriend—are jeans from the men’s department that are slightly too long (so you must roll them into cuffs) and slightly too big, particularly in the waist.  A belt is mandatory.
  • Bootcut –are jeans with a wider cuff, never to be confused with “bell bottoms” which were jeans with a very wide cuff.
  • Cargo jeans—loose fitting jeans with a lot of pockets on the legs.
  • Trouser jeans—are fitted at the waist and hips and fit more loosely along the thighs and legs.

The language of jeans like the pants it describes is constantly changing. For fashionistas, it is a full time job.

Fashions that never go out of style

Fashion trends seem to change as often as the wind blows, and for many people it can be difficult to try to keep up with the demands of trying to stay in style.  But, with a little bit of smart shopping, anyone can stay current by investing in a few pieces that will never go out of style, yet can be matched with other trendy accessories to keep the look current.  Here are a few fashions that will never go out of style, and should be a staple in everyone’s wardrobe.

Black Dress Pants

Black dress pants can be appropriate for practically any setting.  When shopping for that perfect pair of black dress pants, it is important to make sure that they fit properly.  Avoid pants that are too tight, too loose, too long, or too short, because any of these problems can cause the pants to make the wearer look sloppy.

Well-Fitted Jeans

Even though most people have quite a few pairs of jeans in their wardrobe, everyone should be sure to have at least one pair of well-fitting light jeans and one pair of dark jeans.  Slightly flared jeans never go out of style, and can be dressed up or dressed down.

Button-Down Shirt

A crisp white button down shirt is timeless.  It should be slightly tailored, and should not be too loose, short, tight, or in any other way be ill-fitting.

Khakis

Khakis come in so many different styles, and some may not fit the classic look that will stand the test of fashion time.  So, khakis should be well fitted, and pleats should be avoided.

Newest Jean Trend: Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans are the newest fashion trend in jeans. These comfortable jeans are being worn by young and old alike. Although skinny jeans were actually introduced in the 1950′s, they have once again become the most popular style of jeans. Originally, a variation of the skinny jean was referred to as pencil pants. They were very popular among rock stars of both sexes. Skinny jeans are nearly always made of denim, but can also be manufactured with other types of material that gives them the ability to stretch.They have a tight fit and a tapered leg.

Skinny jeans are available in almost every department store and can be found in nearly every color one can imagine. Teens began wearing the jeans in the late 1990′s, but the trend has become excessively more popular as time has passed. Not only are teenage girls wearing skinny jeans, but so are teen boys.The most popular colors tend to be true denim blue, but black is also worn quite frequently.

Adults are also enjoying the growing trend of wearing skinny jeans. Because the fabrics used to produce the jeans include a combination of materials that allow the jeans to stretch easily, adults find them comfortable and easy to wear for casual purposes. Fashion experts state that although anyone of any size can wear skinny jeans, they are most attractive when worn by those with a medium sized figure. People that are too thin will look even more so in a pair of skinny jeans, which may not be flattering. The same goes for those with fuller figures. Skinny jeans, because they fit so tightly, accentuate the figure.

Skinny jeans can be worn with a variety of accessories. T-shirts go well with them for a causal look, as well as longer styled, dressier blouses. Shirts that accompany skinny jeans can be either tucked in or not, depending on the wishes of the wearer.

When it finally became acceptable for women to start wearing jeans, there was no turning back. They have become one of the most owned and loved items of clothing in most women’s closet’s. Through the years, women’s jeans have gone through many changes.When ladies first began wearing them, they were usually stuck either wearing men’s jeans in the smallest sizes available, or they tried to make their own. Before long, designers realized that their women customers needed their own style of jeans.
Jeans have taken on all kinds of styles and are now available in nearly every color imaginable.They are available at almost all kinds of shops, from inexpensive department stores to designer shops. Ranges of sizes have also emerged. In the past, the smallest size of jeans that were available were a size eight. Now they come in sizes ranging from zero to extra large, so everyone in every size category can wear them.
Bell bottom jeans were the beginning of what is now known as a trendy style of jeans. These jeans were fairly tight in the waist and thigh, but gradually became very wide at the bottom. Some state they were fashioned after sailor’s pants. Straight legged jeans were next and are still very popular. Boot legged jeans became popular for those wishing to wear their jeans with boots. Distressed jeans are probably one of the main jean trends that has caused controversy between parents and teens, as distressed jeans are purposely made to look old and ragged, with tears and rips in the legs. Today’s current trend in jeans are called skinny jeans. These are very tight fitting jeans, but are usually made of not only denim, but a stretchy material that allows them to be comfortable as well as stylish.

Fashion Tips for Teen Girls

Nearly all teen girls like to make fashion statements and to do that, they need a lot of clothes that are in style. Fashions come and go though, so keeping up with the latest trend might seem hard. In order to have a full wardrobe, you will need to buy some basic clothing items that are in style and wear well. In essence, you need a basic wardrobe and anything else you manage to get is extra fun!

One item you may want to have a good supply of is jeans. The fashions and trends for jeans change periodically, but the old styles never really go all the way out of fashion. Through the generations, blue jeans have been slim fitting, bell bottomed, distressed and then back to slim fitting. The current style fashion for jeans is the skinny leg variety, which are jeans that fit quite snug. Most everyone can wear this style of jeans and look good in them. Distressed jeans are also a big fashion statement. Luckily, nearly everyone can create their own distressed jeans out of a pair of old jeans, by roughing them up a bit with small tears.

T-shirts are also good to have hanging in the closet. T-Shirts come in every imaginable style and color. You can find them in extra large sizes for a baggy look or skin tight styles. You can even make your own personalized T-shirt by using a printer to transfer your own artwork onto the front or back of the shirt.

Besides T-Shirts and jeans, you will need a few pairs of shorts and some accessories such as belts in a variety of styles. A few pairs of shoes is usually all that is needed. Having a jacket for cool weather and a heavier coat for cold winters, should just about give you what you need for a basic wardrobe.
